The word for what a car does at impact, in the trade, is a cage. Not because it locks you in. Because it protects you like one.

The frame is engineered to fold. The hood crumples on purpose so the passenger compartment does not. The seat belt spreads a huge instantaneous force across the strongest parts of the body, the pelvis and the collarbone, and stretches long enough to slow you down over inches instead of stopping you in nothing. The airbag inflates and deflates in the time it takes to blink so your head lands on a pillow and not on the wheel. All of it, from the sheet metal to the belt to the bag, exists to do one thing. Turn a very fast stop into a slightly less fast stop, and spread the force out over the largest possible area and the longest possible time.

On a motorcycle, none of that exists. The rider is the crumple zone. The rider is the restraint. The rider is the airbag. When a bike hits something at highway speed, the bike stops when it stops, and the rider keeps going at whatever speed they were doing until something else stops them. Usually the something else is fixed and hard.

Put a motorcycle up against a tractor trailer and the asymmetry stops being an argument. A loaded rig runs to tens of tons. A rider on a big touring bike is a small fraction of a percent of that. When they meet, only one of them cares about the collision. The truck keeps its line. The rider is thrown forward, still carrying the speed the bike was doing before impact, until the road or the trailer catches them.

The first impact is not always the killing blow. The second one often is. A rider separated from the bike near a trailer lands in the worst place on the road, because the trailer is not done moving. Its rear wheels are still coming. Impact one is metal against metal at the front. Impact two is body against pavement in the middle. Impact three, if it comes, is a set of duals rolling through the space the body just landed in. Any one of those, alone, is fatal often enough. Stack them and the chance is close to certain.

Then there is what the truck driver could and could not see. A semi has mirrors, but it has more blind spot than mirror. There is a zone directly in front of the cab that a driver at that height cannot see. There is a zone along both sides that grows longer the further back the trailer runs. A car in those zones is hard to see. A motorcycle in them is invisible. The agency that regulates trucking gives everyone else on the road one rule for it: if you cannot see the truck driver’s face in his mirror, he cannot see you. The drivers who check their mirrors still miss what does not stand as tall as their windows.

And the reaction time is asymmetric in a way people who have never ridden do not understand. In a car the driver has one job with the hands, steer. On a bike the rider is doing more, all at once, with less. Hands are throttle and front brake. Feet are shift and rear brake. Body is lean angle, and lean angle is steering. To swerve, you counter steer. To brake hard, you have to modulate front and rear or a wheel locks and you go down before the collision that was going to hit you gets there. It is more decisions, faster, on a machine that punishes any wrong one.

None of this is a lecture about who was at fault. Fault is a separate question with its own rules. This is only about the physics, and the physics is this. A car in a crash gets a cage that was built for the purpose. A bike in the same crash does not, and the rider stands in for it. Everything the belt and the airbag and the crumple would have taken, the body takes instead. That is the science of the injury when two wheels meet a heavy truck at highway speed, and it is why the medical picture on that side of the wreck is almost never small.
