Why hitting the back of a truck at a speed you would walk away from in traffic can take your life.
The ride-height trap
A loaded trailer's rear frame sits about chest height off the road. A car's hood, and the crush structure packed behind it, sit far lower. In a rear collision the car slides under the trailer instead of crushing against it. The engine block and the bumper, the parts engineered to swallow the hit, never touch a thing. The trailer's steel rear sill meets the car at windshield height instead. The crumple zone is skipped, and the impact lands where the driver's head is.
Why the speedometer lies
Injury tracks the change in velocity and how fast it arrives, not the number you were doing. Energy climbs with the square of speed, so a closing speed that sounds minor carries far more than its share of force. And in an underride the passenger compartment stops against a rigid steel bar in a fraction of a second, a short and violent spike. The skeleton stops. The organs keep moving. The brain meets the skull, and the aorta, anchored at its arch, shears. Belts and airbags are timed to a front structure that is supposed to engage. Underride never lets them do their job.
The bar that is supposed to stop it
The rear guard, the old Mansfield bar, exists for exactly this, to keep a car from sliding under. The federal standards for those guards were strengthened in 2022, and the research on how often underride drives these deaths comes from the crash-safety literature. Which is why, in a rear-underride case, whether the guard was there, sound, and maintained is not a footnote. It is the liability question.
Then the fire
A ruptured fuel line turns fuel to vapor, and a single spark from steel on pavement is enough. Thermal injury then compounds a wound that trauma alone might have let a person survive. The airway burns from heat it never had to touch, and fluid loss drives the body into shock. A crash that was survivable on impact becomes one that is not.
The lesson
"It was just a fender-bender" is the first thing the other side reaches for. In a truck case it is the wrong frame. A car meeting a trailer is not two cars meeting, and the injuries prove it. The question is never only how fast. It is what the car struck, at what height, and whether the guard that was built to prevent exactly this did its job.
