We call it rest. The nervous system calls it something older.

For nearly all of human history, a body that could not move was a body in trouble: sick, hurt, or cornered by something with teeth. The brain still runs that math. It reads stillness as risk.

Take a man who moved every day and force him to stop, and the machinery movement fed goes idle. The muscles quit sending their chemical mail to the brain, the neurotrophic supply that held his mood level falls, and within two weeks the hippocampus itself begins to thin. What comes next, the flat days, the short fuse, the fog, is not weakness of character. It is an ancient alarm doing exactly its job, reading a motionless body as a body in danger.

For the client who went from forty miles a week to a couch, that is the word. Not that he got sad. He got still. And to the oldest part of him, stillness is not nothing. It is the signal his own biology evolved to dread.

The move, at the counsel table: do not let the mental-anguish story float free of the body. Tie it to the stop. When the movement ended, the chemistry changed, and the mood followed on a schedule the literature can show. That is not a soft plea for sympathy. It is cause and effect.
