In a chain-reaction crash, the label hides the one thing that matters: which hit did the harm.
A count, not an explanation
A summary that says three vehicles were involved tells you how many, not which one caused the injury. A car can be struck from behind, survive it, and then be pushed into something far worse. The first contact and the fatal contact are often not the same event.
The second hit can carry more energy
When a lighter vehicle is shoved into a heavier one, or into a fixed object, the second collision can deliver a bigger change in velocity than the first. The occupant has already been loaded once, restraints partly spent and body out of position, when the larger hit arrives. And if that larger hit is the side or rear of a trailer, underride is the risk: the car slides under, the crumple zone never engages, and the edge enters at head height.
How you prove which hit mattered
You do not guess. You sequence the crash from what it left behind, the crush profiles, the paint transfer, the debris field and final rest positions, and from the vehicle's own event data recorder, the black box, which can capture speed and braking in the seconds around impact. Read together, they put the impacts in order and show which one the body could not survive.
Why more than one party can matter
If one driver's carelessness starts the chain and an unguarded trailer finishes it, both can bear on the claim. Sorting that out is the difference between a multi-vehicle accident and an answer.
The lesson
The sequence is the case. Do not accept the count in place of the order.
