The explosion lasts a fraction of a second. The ringing lasts the rest of the person's life. Of all the injuries a blast or a burst of industrial noise can do, the one to the ear is among the most permanent and the most dismissed, because it leaves nothing to see and everything to hear, or to stop hearing. The science of why is worth knowing, because it is the science of an injury that never heals.

Deep in the inner ear, in a coiled chamber called the cochlea, sit rows of microscopic hair cells. They are the translators. When sound enters, they convert the vibration in the fluid into the nerve signals the brain reads as hearing. There are only so many of them, arranged with exquisite precision, and they are fragile. A loud enough sound, sustained noise on a work site or a single violent blast, does to them what a storm does to a field of wheat: it flattens them, and it kills them.

Here is the fact that makes this permanent. Human hair cells do not regenerate. Some animals regrow them; people do not. The ones you are born with are the ones you have, and when noise or a blast destroys them, they are, as the National Institute on Deafness puts it, gone for good. There is no medicine that regrows them and no surgery that replaces them. Hearing aids can amplify what is left, but they cannot restore what was lost, because the machinery that did the hearing is simply no longer there.

The damage comes in two ways. It can be gradual, the slow erosion of years around loud machinery, each day taking a few more cells until one day the person realizes the world has gone muffled. Or it can be instant. A single intense impulse, a blast, a gunshot near the head, can destroy hair cells in a moment and cause a permanent loss that arrives all at once. The industrial worker and the blast survivor sit at two ends of the same mechanism, and both end up in the same place, with an ear that has lost cells it will never make again.

And then there is the sound that will not stop. When the hair cells are damaged, the ear often does not go silent; it does the opposite. It generates a phantom noise, a ringing, a buzzing, a high whine that no one else can hear and the sufferer cannot escape. That is tinnitus, and it is one of the cruelest of these injuries precisely because it is invisible and unrelenting. It steals sleep. It wears on the mind. It has no off switch, and for many people it never fades. A person can look completely healthy and be listening, every waking hour, to a sound only he can hear.

This is where the medicine meets the courtroom, because an injury that shows on no scan is easy to wave away. There is no image of tinnitus, no X-ray of a dead hair cell to hand a jury. The defense will call it subjective, exaggerated, unprovable. But the mechanism is real, measured, and well understood, and the loss itself is documentable through the hearing tests that map exactly which frequencies the ear can no longer reach. The injury is not imaginary because it is invisible. The ear was damaged in a way that does not heal, and the ringing is the sound of that damage, playing on with no end.

So take the ear seriously, because the law sometimes does not. A blast or a lifetime of noise can destroy, in a moment or by inches, the one set of cells the body will never rebuild, and leave a person half-deaf and never again in silence. There is nothing minor about an injury you carry every second and cannot turn off. It just happens to be one you cannot see, which is exactly why it has to be understood.
