An injury that puts a leg in a cast, or a person in a bed, is not finished when the bone knits. Stillness has its own danger, and it can arrive weeks later as a clot.
Why blood clots when the body stops
Blood is meant to move. When an injured limb is held still, the flow through the deep veins slows, and slow blood is more likely to clot. Injury adds two more pushes: damage to the vessel itself, and a body chemistry that turns more prone to clotting after trauma. Doctors have a name for that trio of slowed flow, vessel injury, and sticky blood. It is called Virchow’s triad, and together those three are why a serious leg injury raises the risk of a deep vein clot.
The quiet part, and the deadly part
A deep vein clot can sit in the calf or the thigh with little more than swelling and an ache, easy to write off as part of the original injury. The danger is when a piece breaks free and travels to the lungs. That is a pulmonary embolism, and it can kill in minutes, in a person who looked like they were recovering. The crash was survived. The stillness after it was not.
Why this matters to the case
Because the clot comes late and quietly, it is easy for a defense to call it unrelated, a separate medical event that merely happened to follow. The medicine says otherwise: immobilization after trauma is a recognized cause. The timeline, the injury, and the enforced stillness connect the later death or the second hospital stay back to the crash that started it.

The harm of a serious injury is not only the wound. It is everything the wound forces the body to stop doing. A clot that forms in a healing leg is part of the crash, not a coincidence after it.
